London prepares for Thames cable car attraction

London prepares for Thames cable car attraction
18 Jun 2012

People visiting London will soon be able to cross the River Thames by cable car.

The new attraction, known as the Emirates Air Line, is set to launch on 28 June and will transport passengers between the ExCeL exhibition centre and the O2 Arena in Greenwich.

A single fare will cost £3.20 for Oyster card-holders and £4.30 for those paying cash.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson described the cable car, which should prove popular with people visiting the city during the Olympic Games, as a 'spectacular new addition to London's skyline'.

He added that it will 'provide a much-needed new river crossing in the east of our great city'.

Emirates, the Dubai-based airline, is sponsoring the attraction for ten years at a cost of £36 million.

It will be capable of carrying up to 2,500 people per hour in each direction.

The O2 Arena is set to host basketball and gymnastics events during London 2012, which gets underway on 27 July.
