Report shows growth of UAE tourism

The recent growth and success of the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) tourism industry has been highlighted in a new report from MasterCard Worldwide.

Dubai performed well in the company's study, ranking eighth in terms of inbound international visitor numbers, ahead of destinations such as New York, Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur.

Abu Dhabi, meanwhile, was identified as the fourth fastest-growing city based on inbound travel, outstripping the likes of Istanbul, Singapore and Toronto.

Tourism in the UAE's capital is now set to develop three and a half times faster than in New York, according to the second annual MasterCard Worldwide Global Destination Cities Index.

Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, the firm's global economic adviser, said the latest index shows that the overall travel and tourism picture is positive, despite the sluggish economic climate.

'We continue to see hotspots of strong growth around the globe, with major global destination cities attracting international visitor arrivals and expenditure and acting as important engines of growth,' added Dr Wong.

The study predicted a record 16.9m international tourists for London this year, putting the English capital at the top of the ranking, followed by Paris, Bangkok, Singapore and Istanbul.
