Art fans invited to Oslo to see Munch paintings
29 Jun 2012

Art enthusiasts have been invited to catch flights to Oslo this year to explore the world's largest collection of pieces by Edvard Munch.

When he died in 1944, Munch bequeathed all of the artworks still in his possession to the municipality of Oslo, leading to the opening of the Munch Museum in 1963.

Visit Norway describes the institution as 'one of the most comprehensive one-man museums in the world', with a collection encompassing more than half of the artist's paintings, including two versions of The Scream.

Visitors to Oslo can also head to the National Gallery, which bought its first painting from Munch, Night in Nizza, in 1891.

Today, the attraction has an entire room dedicated to the painter, featuring highlights such as Ashes, The Dance of Life, Puberty and the most famous version of The Scream from 1893.

The Norwegian capital is not the only city where people can explore Munch's work this year, with an exhibition dedicated to the artist now open at London's Tate Modern and due to run until 14 October 2012.
