International visitor arrivals in Asia-Pacific destinations - a group that includes Mexico, the United States, Australia and India - increased by 10% year on year in March 2012, according to new figures.

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (Pata) released statistics showing that all sub-regions posted strong gains in visitor numbers.

Japan staged a recovery from the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011 with a 92% year-on-year rise in arrivals, while Nepal and Sri Lanka recorded growth of 37% and 21% respectively.

Ongoing increases in travel to Canada (+9%) and the US (+14%) helped North America achieve an 11% upturn in inbound tourism from overseas.

Pata also released figures relating to source markets for the Asia-Pacific countries, with the UK and Germany showing 'outstanding gains' of about 30% in March following years of sluggish performance.

Martin Craigs, the association's chief executive officer, said: 'Even under the constraints of the current global economy, the Asia-Pacific region continues to produce strong performances in international travel flows.'
