New movie to showcase Tasmanian landscape

New movie to showcase Tasmanian landscape
3 Jul 2012

Tasmania's tourist board has encouraged film fans to check out the new Willem Dafoe film The Hunter to see some of the landscapes found on Australia's island state.

The film is described as a psychological drama that follows a mercenary, played by Dafoe, who is sent from Europe by a biotech company to track down the supposedly extinct Tasmanian tiger.

Produced almost entirely on location in the state, the movie is based on a novel by Julia Leigh published in 1999 and directed by Daniel Nettheim.

In addition to Academy Award nominee Dafoe, the cast includes Sam Neill and Frances O'Connor.

The Tasmanian tiger is thought to have been extinct since 1936, when the last captive member of the species died in Hobart's Beaumaris Zoo, but there have been many reported sightings of the animal in some of the region's wildest areas.

Wildlife and nature lovers interested in heading to the island to see some of its sights can catch flights with airlines such as Qantas or take a ferry from Melbourne.
