Poland has enjoyed a boost in profile as a travel destination after co-hosting the Euro 2012 football tournament with Ukraine, according to research.

The country's national tourist office announced the results of a survey of fans showing that 85% of visitors felt safe during their stay in host cities.

More than three-quarters (79%) of respondents said they would return to Poland, while 92% would recommend the nation to their friends.

Just over 74% of the British visitors polled rated their stay in the country as good or excellent, along with 72% of the French and 61% of Germans.

The tournament has resulted in Poland gaining a great deal of trust across Europe, said Bartlomiej Walas, vice president of the national tourist board.

He added: 'While attractiveness of a destination can be determined on the basis of price and quality, thus making it look more competitive, you just cannot influence a tourist's impression about a particular destination.'

More than 3.5m people visited the country's fan zones and stadiums in Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan during Euro 2012.

Ukraine hosted matches in Kiev, Lviv, Donetsk and Kharkiv.
