EasyJet tests ash detection system

EasyJet is currently participating in a trial of Airborne Volcanic Object Imaging Detector (Avoid) ash detection equipment on A340-300 aircraft in partnership with Airbus and Nicarnica Aviation.
The programme will continue until 14 July and initial test flights at altitudes of up to 40,000ft have been a success.
If any volcanic activity occurs at Stromboli or Etna, the aircraft may be flown to Italy to trial the detection technology against any ash emitted.
There is also a possibility that the plane could be flown to the Atlantic Ocean west of Morocco to see if the equipment can identify fine particles of sand at distances of up to 50km.
Ian Davies, easyJet's engineering director, said: 'Now that the first phase of testing is well underway, easyJet and Airbus foresee being able to provide Avoid ash detection support this summer for the London Games.'
He went on to note that the possibility of volcanic eruptions remains a threat to the aviation industry, with increased seismic activity recently detected at the Katla and Askja volcanoes in Iceland.
