Portugal 'offers great diversity'

Portugal's national tourism agency has highlighted the diversity and range of experiences on offer in the destination.
Filipe Silva, Turismo de Portugal's tourism director, said visitors will find something different in each of the country's main areas, such as Porto, Centro, the Lisbon region, Alentejo, the Algarve, Madeira and the Azores.
He pointed out that holidaymakers can enjoy everything from good food to outdoor adventures in scenic surroundings.
'Tranquil beaches, wonderful weather, fabulous food and wine, picturesque towns, idyllic islands, surfing, sailing and golf courses are all here - set against a rich backdrop of history and heritage,' said Mr Silva.
The tourist board spokesman recommended some activities for people interested in going off the beaten track, such as sampling the wines on offer in areas around the Douro river or seeing the abbey of Santa Maria da Vitoria near Lisbon.
Holidaymakers can reach mainland Portugal by catching flights to Faro, Porto or Lisbon, the capital city.
