Learning more about cultural heritage is one of the main reasons for UK travellers to visit Thailand, according to research by the country's tourist board.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) carried out a consumer study in five key European markets - the UK, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands - to gain a better understanding of how holidaymakers perceive the country and how visitor numbers can be maintained.

Results from the UK showed that the cost of travel and word-of-mouth marketing are also significant factors for people considering a trip to the Asian nation.

More than half of respondents from the UK, France and Germany know Thailand reasonably well in terms of its geographical location and attractions such as culture and cuisine.

TAT governor Suraphon Svetasreni said European markets are generally performing well and the tourism authority will maintain a strong marketing presence in the region.

He added: 'This study was designed to help us better target our future marketing efforts so that we continue to target the right customers with the right product at the right price.'

The five surveyed countries sent over 2.3m visitors to Thailand in 2011, 5.35% more than in the previous year.
