Brisbane Airport using faster self-service bag-drop system
3 Aug 2012
Regular air travellers who use and appreciate innovations such as self-service check-in could see the benefit of a new system being used at Brisbane Airport.
Technology provider SITA and baggage handling specialist BCS Group have launched a project at the base that allows passengers to drop off hold luggage in less than 25 seconds.
The method is being trialled on domestic flights operated by Jetstar and is set to be expanded to international routes.
Roel Hellemons of the Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) said the new system is one of a number of technological initiatives at the base designed to improve operations, enhance the passenger experience and make optimum use of available space.
According to a recent SITA survey, nearly half of air passengers checking in at desks do so because they need to check in luggage and two-thirds (65%) are interested in self-service bag drop.
Ilya Gutlin, the company's president for the Asia Pacific region, said: 'At Brisbane, the airport is taking the lead and that is why we are working with the team at BAC to try out a common-use solution which will handle multiple airlines.'
Flights to Brisbane are available with carriers such as Qantas, British Airways and Malaysia Airlines.
