Southend Airport internationally recognised as a London gateway

Southend Airport internationally recognised as a London gateway
3 Aug 2012

Southend Airport has celebrated the news that the International Air Transport Association (Iata) has officially included the base within its classification of the London metropolitan area.

This means international travellers searching for flights to London will be offered Southend as an option alongside the capital's five other gateways - Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Luton and Stansted.

The Civil Aviation Authority has always classed the Essex base as being in London but Iata, historically, has not.

Managing director Ian Welch said the placement of Southend alongside the city's other gateways will provide more opportunities for the airport to promote the good customer service and other benefits it can offer passengers, particularly during the Olympic Games.

He added: 'We look forward to even more people discovering our new light and airy terminal building less than 100 paces from our brand new railway station with up to eight trains per hour into the heart of London.'

EasyJet, which operates flights to Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Belfast and other popular destinations from Southend, recently carried out a survey suggesting passengers have been satisfied with the overall customer experience at the airport.
