The west coast of Scotland is the ideal destination for people planning a sailing holiday in the UK, according to an expert.

Sailor John MacKay, who will attempt to circumnavigate the planet as part of the Vendee Globe regatta later this year, said the Malin and Hebrides regions offer the best sailing in the world.

He pointed out that holidays at sea are an accessible option, with boat charters available for reasonable prices and only one person with good sailing experience required to control a vessel capable of accommodating half a dozen people.

Mr MacKay also highlighted some of the experiences that make sailing trips an attractive option.

'You will have the time of your life,' he said. 'Sailing is just a fantastic thing to do.

'On the west coast there is so much happening - fabulous foods, castles, scenery - it is indescribable.'

Travellers can also seek out some of the top urban attractions and activities on offer in Scotland by catching flights to Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen.
