Olympics sees record number of people travelling around London

London's Olympic Games has brought a record number of passengers to the city's transport systems, with the Underground carrying some 4.4m people on Friday 3 August, more than on any other day in its history.
The previous record of 4.31m customers was set on the day before as more travellers used the Tube to visit sporting events, shops, restaurants and visitor attractions.
Underground stations in the West End, one of the most popular areas for tourists, experienced a 27% increase in passenger numbers on the evening of Saturday 4 August.
The capital's Barclays Cycle Hire scheme has also enjoyed unprecedented success, achieving 1m rentals for the first time in July, while on 4 August Emirates handled a record 24,451 customers in London.
Mayor Boris Johnson said last weekend's 'outstanding' success for Team GB brought hundreds of thousands of people to Olympic venues, while crowds lined the streets to cheer on triathlon and marathon competitors.
'Now London's transport network is continuing to put in some record-breaking performances of its own as it moves people into and across the city,' he added.
