Air passenger duty campaign gathers strength

Air passenger duty campaign gathers strength
10 Aug 2012

The organisers of the Fair Tax on Flying campaign against air passenger duty (APD) have announced that the initiative is moving forward strongly, with nearly 100,000 confirmed supporters.

Six new members recently joined the cause, including the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, Definitive Caribbean, Multicom and Wales Air Forum.

It was confirmed last week that 85,000 people had participated in the movement by emailing their MPs to express opposition to Britain's heavy flight taxes.

Organisers are reportedly confident that they will reach the milestone of 100,000 supporters before the campaign deadline arrives in six weeks' time.

Jerry Blackett, chief executive of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, said APD reform could be an important part of the UK's economic recovery, with major export markets such as India, Brazil and Mexico currently incurring some of the highest levels of taxation.

'If we are serious about an export-led recovery then we need to ensure our aviation taxes are competitive and fair,' said Mr Blackett.
