17 Aug 2012
British Airways has announced that it will expand its network from London Gatwick next year with the launch of flights to Sri Lanka.
The airline confirmed a new route to Colombo that will operate via Male in the Maldives from 31 March 2012.
A Boeing 777 will be deployed on the service, offering a choice of three classes including Club World with fully flat beds.
BA pointed out that the UK has the second-highest number of tourists visiting Sri Lanka after India and said the new connection will provide a 'fantastic opportunity' for travellers to reach the island from Gatwick.
Silla Maizey, the airline's managing director at the London airport, said: 'This is such an exciting new route for us.
'Sri Lanka has so much to offer visitors, from beach, spa or adventure holidays to cultural, wildlife and nature breaks.'
The carrier provides links to several destinations in Asia, including Mumbai, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
