India and Brazil among best-value gap year destinations

Britons hoping to stick to a budget during a gap year adventure in the near future have been encouraged to consider destinations such as Brazil, India, Nepal and South Africa.

According to research by foreign currency provider Moneycorp and advice website gapyear.com, all of these countries are considerably more affordable for UK travellers this year as a result of the strength of the pound.

Sterling is 26% up on the Brazilian real and 22% stronger against Nepal's rupee compared to last year, the figures show, while against the Indian rupee and South African rand the British currency has risen by 21% and 18% respectively.

Olann Kerrison, currency expert at Moneycorp, said there has been a 'great deal of fluctuation' in international exchange rates over the past year.

He added: 'The strength of the pound is great news for gappers heading off on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.'

The report listed Australia and New Zealand as the most popular gap year destinations for Brits, followed by the south-east Asian backpacker hotspots of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.
