Singapore Airlines launches inflight internet programme
10 Sep 2012
Singapore Airlines has announced a US$50m (£31.3m) programme to provide inflight internet and mobile data services to passengers.
Connectivity is now available on 14 aircraft in the carrier's fleet, including all five Airbus A340-500s operating flights to long-haul destinations such as Los Angeles and Newark and planes flying to Australia, a market for which regulatory approval had not previously been acquired.
The technology will be gradually rolled out across the airline's fleet of long-haul Airbus A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs over the next two years, providing inflight Wi-Fi for people catching flights to Singapore from London, Frankfurt, Tokyo and other cities.
Passengers can surf the internet, send and receive text messages on GSM-compatible mobile phones and access email accounts on smartphones and other internet-enabled devices.
Tan Pee Teck, Singapore Airlines' senior vice president of products and services, said it is important for the company to evolve in light of customers' changing preferences towards entertainment and connectivity.
He added: 'There will be much more investment in the months and years ahead to keep our customers both connected and entertained.'
