EasyJet underlines commitment to Northern Ireland

EasyJet underlines commitment to Northern Ireland
17 Sep 2012

EasyJet has appeared before the House of Commons Northern Ireland Affairs Committee to underline its commitment to serving the region and give evidence regarding air transport strategy.

UK director Paul Simmons pointed out that the airline began operations from Belfast in September 1998 and now employs over 230 local people.

The carrier has a market share of 46% in Northern Ireland - compared to Aer Lingus' 8% and British Airways' 7% - and serves 23 destinations directly from Belfast International Airport.

Travellers heading to south-east England can fly to four London airports with easyJet.

As well as commenting on the airline's significance for Northern Ireland's aviation industry, Mr Simmons spoke about air passenger duty and the challenge it poses to growth.

He pointed out that local people flying to cities such as London and Manchester are at a particular disadvantage because they are forced to pay the duty twice.

'This is an unfair tax overall, but it's especially unfair for the people of Northern Ireland,' said Mr Simmons.

'And if this tax is increased, it will have a serious impact on tourism.'
