Virgin Atlantic confirms airport change in Tokyo
21 Sep 2012
Virgin Atlantic has announced a forthcoming change to its flights to Tokyo, with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner set to serve Haneda airport instead of Narita from London.
Due to take effect from spring 2014, the move is the result of a number of developments at Haneda, including enhancement of the international terminal.
The airport, which has mainly been used for domestic Japanese services until now, is also making more daylight take off and landing slots available to long-haul airlines.
Talks between Japan and the UK earlier this year also agreed that night-time restrictions at Haneda could be relaxed if carriers maintain a commercial presence at Narita.
Virgin Atlantic chief executive Steve Ridgway said 2014 will be a 'key year' in the airline's history, marking its 25th anniversary of operating flights to Japan.
He added: 'We have definitely seen the market recover post last year's tragic earthquake, with an additional 23% capacity and passenger numbers up by 77%.
'We look forward to enhancing that further as we move into Haneda airport.'
British Airways offers five weekly flights to Tokyo Haneda from London Heathrow and has a codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines.
