People planning to book London hotels for a break next year will have the chance to see some new exhibitions taking place in Greenwich.

The Royal Observatory Greenwich will host Alien Revolution from March to August 2013, exploring the 16th century emergence of the view that there could be intelligent life on other planets.

Several other events will be held as part of a Royal Observatory season dedicated to the concept of alien beings, including planetarium shows, public talks, workshops and screenings of classic sci-fi movies.

Another popular attraction in this part of London, the National Maritime Museum, will unveil The Great Map, a new permanent installation, in March next year.

Visitors will be able to walk across the surface of a giant interactive world map to learn more about some of the most famous, and infamous, chapters in Britain's seafaring history.

Nelson, Navy, Nation, a new permanent gallery due to open at the National Maritime Museum in October 2013, will explore how the Royal Navy affected lives and British history in the 18th century.
