Holidaymakers visiting El Gouna in Egypt will soon be able to add some sophisticated culture to the watersports, golf and other leisure activities on offer in the destination.

It has been announced that the Red Sea resort is to become the first Egyptian location outside Cairo to offer live broadcasts of performances by the New York-based Metropolitan Opera.

Screenings will take place in a pilot campus of the Technische Universitat Berlin, which will have its official opening on 27 October 2012.

Tickets will cost the equivalent of £6.20 per session and a full list of broadcast times can be found on the Metropolitan Opera website.

The season will run from 27 October this year until 27 April 2013.

Sherine Sennara, public relations manager for Orascom Development, the company behind El Gouna, said: 'With 10km of secluded coastline, unspoilt lagoons and pristine islands enveloped in year-round sunshine, El Gouna is the perfect winter-sun destination and now we have the added dimension of live-streamed opera in the town.'

The resort offers amenities including 17 hotels, three marinas, an 18-hole golf course and numerous bars and restaurants.
