Britons planning a short break this autumn should consider visiting Belgium, a tourism spokeswoman has said.

Sophie Bouallegue, press and public relations manager at the Belgian Tourist Office - Brussels and Wallonia, pointed out that one of the attractions of this time of year is the lull in visitor numbers between summer and Christmas.

She also commented on some of the natural spectacles on offer in the region during the autumn months.

'Autumn is a slightly quieter time before the popular Christmas market period and many hotels have special autumn deals on,' said Ms Bouallegue.

'The scenery in the Belgian Ardennes is also spectacular at this time of year.'

Holidaymakers visiting Brussels, Belgium's capital city, in the autumn can make the most of extended opening hours at the destination's museums, some of which stay open until late on Thursday evenings.

Brussels will host Chocolate Week from 19 to 25 November this year, providing the opportunity for members of the public to sample sweet treats created by a range of participating chocolatiers.
