More British consumers have embarked on cruise holidays in 2012, according to figures released by the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) at the World Travel Market in London.

The statistics indicate that 1.72m Britons will take an ocean cruise this year, 20,000 more than in 2011.

According to predictions from the PSA, passenger numbers will increase by more than 2% to 1.76m next year as a result of strong competition in the market and the rising popularity of departures from UK ports.

Ongoing fleet expansion is also supporting growth in the industry, with nearly $5bn (£3.13bn) spent on six major new ships launched this year and a further $3.2bn set to be invested in 2013.

PSA director William Gibbons said cruises have outperformed other holiday sectors this year despite facing some unique challenges.

He added: 'The sheer diversity of cruises offered by our 41 members, coupled with unrivalled value for money, has helped to attract the 'new to cruise' customer key to boosting growth within our sector.'
