Virgin Atlantic has cited the huge success and popularity of the Bollywood film industry as one of the factors in the recent boom in travel to India.

The airline revealed that passenger numbers have increased as movie fans have become increasingly eager to learn more about the country's film scene and experience it first-hand.

Over 1m Brits flew to Mumbai in 2011 and the International Air Transport Association has predicted that this number will rise by 6% a year until 2015.

Virgin Atlantic has responded to the growing demand with the recent announcement of daily flights to Mumbai from London.

Anna Catchpole, a spokeswoman for the airline, said: 'Mumbai is the centre of the Bollywood industry and we expect it to become just as popular as any of the big sets in Hollywood.'

Recent years have also seen more Indian film crews heading to the UK to shoot scenes in locations such as Oxford, Edinburgh, Carlisle, Cardiff and London.
