Egypt tourism ministry reassures international travellers
17 Dec 2012

Travellers planning a trip to Egypt have been reassured that it is 'business as usual' in the country despite ongoing political and civil unrest.

There were protests in Cairo and other locations last week ahead of a planned referendum to ratify a new constitution.

In a statement responding to the events, the Egyptian tourism authority stressed they are of a temporary nature and 'quite expected' during this transitional stage.

'The ministry of tourism takes this opportunity to reassure its international tourism partners as well as its guests that these political developments do not affect services rendered to tourists,' it added.

According to official figures, visitor arrivals in Egypt during the period from January to September 2012 were up by over 20% on the same time last year.

Several developments are expected to support further growth in the industry, including the reoperation of Nile cruises after a hiatus of more than 15 years.
