'Golden year' for Thai tourism

'Golden year' for Thai tourism
7 Jan 2013

Thailand enjoyed a "golden year" for tourism in 2012, according to a tourism board chief, as visitor numbers hit new highs.

Piyaman Techapaibul, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, was delighted by figures showing that the number of inbound tourists to the Asian market hit a record of almost 22m and generating at least THB900bn (£18.2bn).

While Thailand is famous for its beautiful white sand beaches and limestone karst scenery, Ms Techapaibul attributed a good deal of the country's tourism success to increased political stability.

China and Japan were two of the biggest contributors to the visitor total, with an increase in numbers since the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands dispute damaged relations between the neighbours.

Thailand is also popular with British holidaymakers, with the country frequently making the itineraries of backpackers on gap year trips, who are attracted by the cheap prices for food and accommodation on offer.
