Considered to be one of the secrets of Icelanders' long lifespans, the country's numerous volcanic pools can also provide holidaymakers with the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind after their flights to Iceland.

Visit Iceland, the local tourist board, is encouraging visitors to explore three of the nation's top volcanic bathing spots.

The first is a lake-filled crater called Viti, which formed after the eruption of the Askja volcano. Although you might need a the help of a guide to find this remote spot, it's well worth the effort to swim in its 30-degree waters.

A more accessible spot is the Reykjadalur geothermal area near the capital Reykjavik. Here a boiling hot river meets a freezing cold one, combining to create the perfect bathing temperature!

If you're more a shower than a bath person, how about cleansing yourself in the warm waterfall located in Laugarvalladalur Valley, which can be reached by hiking or horseback?

But wherever you are in Iceland, you're sure to find some geothermal pools to warm you up!
