Thailand has been named as the number one holiday destination in the whole of south-east Asia.

The country, which is famed for its picturesque beaches, luxury resorts and vibrant cities, has long been a favourite of everyone from high-end travellers to backpackers on a shoestring budget.

And now its status as one of the world's best-loved destinations has been further enhanced after the country came out on top following a study by Bangkok University.

Of the international tourists polled by the researchers, 58 per cent named Thailand as the top travel destination in the whole of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region, with Vietnam and Cambodia coming second and third respectively.

The study found that travellers are most attracted by Thailand's rich history, including by its numerous sites of archaeological interest, with the country's beaches, food and shopping also proving popular draws.

This research comes soon after the Tourism Authority of Thailand reported that the country welcomed some 21 million visitors in 2012, a 15 per cent increase on the previous year.
