Northern Ireland open for business

Northern Ireland open for business
23 Jan 2013

The Northern Ireland tourism industry wants to reassure visitors that the country is open for business, after flag protests created negative news coverage.

Northern Ireland has come a long way since The Troubles, but all too often media coverage focuses on problems in cities like Belfast, rather than on the wealth of attractions the country has to offer, including the Giant's Causeway and the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge.

Industry figures are therefore keen to shift the focus away from the recent protests in order to prevent lasting damage being done to tourism in the country.

'It is important for Belfast and for the rest of the country to be able tell people that we are still open for business,' Colin Neill, chief executive of the Pubs of Ulster, told the Irish Times.

And the chairman of the tourist board, Howard Hastings, added: 'We've had some terrible coverage and that is very difficult because we had built up such a positive narrative about what Northern Ireland has to offer visitors - we have a great proposition.'
