Japanese tourism industry bounces back

Japanese tourism industry bounces back
28 Jan 2013

The number of visitors to Japan reached 8.4m last year, as the tourism industry recovered following the natural disasters of 2011.

This figure was just shy of the 8.6m who came to the Land of the Rising Sun in 2010 and was 34.6% higher than the year before, the Japan Times reports.

December's figures were especially impressive, with a 20.6% jump in visitors to 689,000 - a record for the month.

However, the tourism board is not resting on its laurels and is looking to attract 10m visitors this year, according to Japan Tourism Agency chief Norifumi Ide.

Top attractions in Japan include the bustling capital city Tokyo, the iconic snow-capped Mount Fuji and the cherry blossoms in the spring.

Indeed, such is the splendour of the trees in April that the locals hold 'hanami' (flower viewing) parties, where they enjoy picnics underneath the blossom with their friends and family.
