Enjoy an inland cruise in the US
29 Jan 2013

With around 1.72m Brits having enjoyed an ocean cruise in 2012, up 20,000 on the previous year, holidaymakers from the UK are being invited to try a different kind of sailing holiday in 2013.

The Great Lakes, located on the US-Canada border, were formed more than 10,000 years ago when glacial ice melted, leaving behind five enormous inland seas that contain more than one fifth of the world's freshwater.

Owing to their vast size, lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario make ideal locations to hop aboard a cruise boat, paddle steamer or other craft and marvel at the spectacular scenery.

With vast expanses of sandy shoreline hugged by pine forests, the Great Lakes region is also wonderful to explore on foot. And such is the scale of these bodies of water that there's even some decent Great Lakes surf spots, with waves getting over head height at times.
