Irish ask Queen to turn Palace green
14 Feb 2013

The chief executive of Tourism Ireland has written to the Queen asking her for permission to turn Buckingham Palace green in celebration of St Patrick's Day.

So far, Niall Gibbons said he has yet to receive a response from the monarch about the proposed light show, but that a 'dialogue' was in progress.

Mr Gibbons also claimed that the Duchess of Cambridge has Irish roots in a bid to further the cause. 'We have an authenticated connection, with all the certificates and everything,' he added.
Despite the Queen's silence on the matter, the Sydney Opera House, Niagara Falls, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Burj al Arab in Dubai, Table Mountain in South Africa, New York's Empire State Building and Berlin's TV Tower will all be going green on 17 March.

St Patrick's Day is celebrated across the world each year with street parades and parties, as well as the consumption of thousands of pints of Guinness.
