Europeans flocking to Peru

European visitors are heading to Peru in their droves, according to new figures from the government.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism released data showing that 2.84m people travelled to the South American country in 2012, which was 10% more than in 2011.

Of these, many were from Europe, with arrivals from the continent up 7% - led by Portugal (+14%), Russia (+14%) and Belgium (+13%), Andina reports.

Most visitors to Peru head for the iconic Incan city of Machu Picchu, which sits high in the Cusco region of the country.

The spectacularly situated ruins are visited by thousands of tourists each day, but Jeff Morgan, executive director of the Global Heritage Fund, told the Independent that it's far from the only historic site worth seeing in Peru.

'Everyone wants to go to Machu Picchu, but there are 25 other sites in Peru that are just as amazing,' he said.
