Witness transhumance in France's Lot Valley
7 Mar 2013

Visitors to France this June can witness the transhumance of 1,000 sheep between the departements of Lot and Cantal in southern France.

Transhumance - from the Latin trans meaning 'across' and humus meaning 'ground' - describes the seasonal migration of livestock and their herders between the lowlands and the mountains - a crucial part of life in the Lot Valley.

For the second time, the sheep will journey to the mountain pastures of Cantal, taking in a route of 180km over 16 days between 1 and 16 June, split into four main stages.

Following the herd, visitors to the region will get to experience the beauty of the scenery in this part of France and enjoy the entertainment being put on in all the villages along the way.

Travellers can visit the Lot region by catching a cheap flight to Toulouse or Bordeaux and then hiring a car.
