A holiday with the lads can often end with sunburn and a hangover, but for one Benidorm holidaymaker, it ended with a jail sentence.

Blackburn resident Jason Proctor's part in a sham marriage scheme was exposed after he went on a break to the Spanish resort, the Telegraph reports.

Instead of honeymooning with his new bride - a Vietnamese who wanted to live in Britain - the fake bridegroom headed off for a month of fun in the sun with his mates.

'They spent a lot of time and money to deceive the authorities, creating the impression that they were genuine marriages,' commented detective superintendent Julie Cross from Lancashire Police.

Following Proctor's holiday, several other members of the gang arranging the ceremonies were also brought to justice.

Benidorm, a resort popular with Brits, is the subject of a TV comedy of the same name, which follows the exploits of holidaymakers at an all-inclusive resort.
