New rail attraction coming to County Antrim

Visitors to County Antrim in Northern Ireland will soon be able to take a step back in time at a steam engine museum.

The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland has won £2.5m of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the EU-backed Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme to develop the tourist attraction.

Using the funding, it will turn the steam engine depot at Whitehead into a living museum, where visitors will be able to see locomotives and carriages being rebuilt.

'It's very important to tell people about what we have and what we do here because there is a real fascination with people of all ages for steam and trains of the past,' project volunteer Edward Friel told the BBC.

Other historic attractions in Country Antrim include the 17th century Old Bushmills Distillery - the oldest licensed distillery in the world - and the 16th century Kinbane Castle  near Ballycastle.
