London Marathon 'to go ahead'

London Marathon 'to go ahead'
16 Apr 2013

Those on city breaks in London this weekend hoping to enjoy Sunday's (21 April) London Marathon have been advised that the event will go ahead.

Following yesterday's (15 April) bomb blasts at the Boston Marathon there had been speculation that the race might be cancelled, but this suggestion was refuted by London Marathon chief executive Nick Bitel.

'We fully expect the London Marathon to go ahead,' he said in a statement.

'The London Marathon has detailed security plans which are developed in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police. But when this type of incident has happened you need to then review those plans you have in place to see what else may be necessary.'

So far three people have died as a result of the twin blasts that occurred at the finish line of the Boston event, just over four hours into the race. It is not yet known who was behind the attack. ADNFCR-408-ID-801571935-ADNFCR
