New Zealand 'doesn't have to be expensive'

Holidaymakers seeking the home of Hobbits and Orcs might find New Zealand is slightly more expensive than they first thought, but the country's Tourism New Zealand head has defended the cost of living.

Kevin Bowler responded to claims that overseas visitors struggle to keep their getaway under budget because of the strength of the Kiwi dollar.

'It's true that from an inbound American or Canadian visitor's perspective it is more expensive,' he noted.

One of the reactions to that is to focus on visitors with a higher level of disposable income.

However, that is not to say that the country is out of bounds for travellers wanting a cheaper holiday. Self-drive holidays, back-packing and cycling tours are all inexpensive alternatives to the usual guided getaway, and visitors can get the chance to swim with dolphins in the sub-tropical Bay of Islands or sample delicious wines in Napier without breaking the bank.ADNFCR-408-ID-801575067-ADNFCR
