Plans unveiled to turn Stansted into four-runway hub

Plans unveiled to turn Stansted into four-runway hub

Ambitious plans to turn Stansted into a four-runway hub airport have been unveiled.

Leading architect Make believes that the £18bn project will not only solve the UK's airport capacity crisis, but also help to rebalance the country's infrastructure, which is currently 'concentrated in the west'.

Make says it will submit its plans to the Airports Commission, which is compiling a report for the government on how best to develop the UK's airport infrastructure, in July.

'We have proved that Stansted is a viable option, deliverable, affordable and linking to central London in less than 30 minutes, crucially ensuring the distribution of growth and economic development to benefit the national population,' commented Ken Shuttleworth, founder of Make.

This development puts Make in direct competition with Foster & Partners, which has already put forward it plans for an airport in the Thames Estuary. Both face a battle with Heathrow, which wants to add additional runways in order to retain its hub status. ADNFCR-408-ID-801590194-ADNFCR
