Dr Beach unveils his pick of the USA's strips of sands
30 May 2013

Dr Stephen Leatherman, director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University, a.k.a 'Dr Beach', has unveiled his list of the USA's top beaches for 2013.

Heading the top ten, which is now in its 22nd year, is Main Beach, located in East Hampton on eastern Long Island, New York - an area not necessarily renowned for its beaches. However, Leatherman describes it as 'an idyllic beach frequented by the rich and famous' and which 'is very safe for bathing and swimming'.

Second place went to Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, Hawaii; St George Island State Park Beach in Florida took third, and Hamoa Beach on the Hawaiian island of Maui came in fourth.

Of the top ten, three are Hawaiian and three are Floridian, underscoring their reputation as top beach destinations.

When compiling his chart, Dr Beach takes 50 criteria into account, including the water temperature, beach material and number of sunny days, scoring each on a scale of one to five.ADNFCR-408-ID-801592158-ADNFCR
