Pope to staycate

Pope to staycate
7 Jun 2013

In keeping with his thus far low-key papacy, Pope Francis has decided he will not be heading to the palatial papal retreat in the town of Castel Gandolfo this summer.

Although his predecessor Benedict loved escaping Rome's stifling heat with a trip to the hills each year, Pope Francis will remain ensconced in the Domus Santa Marta in the Vatican City, Reuters reports.

His decision will go down well with recession-hit Italians. Last year, one in every two could not afford a summer holiday, official data showed.

However, Pope Francis is due to catch a flight to Brazil later this month for his first trip abroad as pontiff, although it's unlikely he'll spend much of his trip relaxing on any beaches.

The papal residence in Castel Gandolfo, which is just 15 miles outside Rome, has perfectly manicured gardens and stunning views over Lake Albano. Pope Francis is due to head to the town for a Sunday blessing on 14 July.ADNFCR-408-ID-801596013-ADNFCR
