Chicago visitor numbers exceed 46m

The number of people visiting Chicago hit 46.24m last year, but the city's mayor Rahm Emanuel wants even more people to book flights to the Windy City

By 2020, he wants 50m people a year to 'enjoy our wonderful city', as he targets job creation and increased tax revenues. 

Last year's total represented a 6.1% increase on 2011's figures, with international visitor numbers up 3.2% to 1.24m. Since launching 'Choose Chicago', the mayor has overseen an increase in tourists by 7m over two years. 

'These are incredible results and are largely a result of how we are proactively and aggressively marketing our destination,' commented Don Welsh, Choose Chicago president and chief executive.

Pat Quinn, governor of Illinois, of which Chicago is the largest city in the state, added: 'From its world-class museums and beautiful lakefront to its diverse culture, Chicago offers visitors a truly unique experience.ADNFCR-408-ID-801598122-ADNFCR
