Ireland visitor numbers up 8%

Ireland visitor numbers up 8%
2 Jul 2013

More people are booking flights to Ireland, with overseas visitor numbers up 8.1% between March and May this year.

According to the Central Statistics Office Ireland, 1.7m foreigners flocked to Irish shores during that period, marking the best performance for tourism in the country since 2009.

Much of the success is being attributed to 'The Gathering', a campaign running throughout 2013 to encourage people with Irish ancestry from across the globe to return 'home'.

'The Gathering Ireland has certainly played a major role in helping boost visitor numbers in the first five months of the year,' commented Tourism Ireland chief executive Niall Gibbons.

'We believe that - working closely with our industry partners in 2013 - we can deliver a 5% increase in visitor numbers.'

There are also signs visits from Britain are recovering after declining in recent years - something Mr Gibbons blames on the recession.ADNFCR-408-ID-801607132-ADNFCR
