Oxford beach opening today

Oxford beach opening today
5 Jul 2013

People staying at hotels in Oxford this weekend will have an unexpected way to enjoy the sunshine - sunbathing on an artificial beach.

The temporary strip of sand in the city's Castle Quarter comes complete with palm trees, deck chairs and a volleyball net, the BBC reports.

It will be open daily to the public for free from early until late throughout the summer, during which time it will host a beach volleyball tournament and cinema screenings.

The beach is the brainchild of businessman and restaurant owner Max Mason.

'Being a naval officer for eight years gave me a deep love for the sea,' he told the news provider.

'Moving to Oxford ten years ago meant I couldn't be further from it, so we've created a beach and packed it with fun things and a programme of events.'

Oxford isn't the only place transforming itself with an urban beach. Later this month, a beach opens in Roald Dahl Plass, Cardiff.ADNFCR-408-ID-801608520-ADNFCR
