New research shows that of the 36.7 million people who go on holiday with a budget, 16 million will spend more than they intended to.

That is according to thinkmoney, which found that in total, us Brits overspend by £2.7 billion while abroad each year.

The average overspend per person is £172.30, but men tend to go even more over the top than women, splashing out an additional £29.90.

For 77% of people, food and eating out was the biggest cause of a blown budget, while 42% overspent on drinks and alcohol.

This was followed by 41% on activities and days out, 32% on souvenir shopping and 28% on treats for the children.

Ian Williams of thinkmoney said: 'It's great to be able to relax while you're on holiday. But it's alarming to see that so many of us don't stick to our budgets when we're away.

'Overspending can mean a real crash back down to reality after a break, and often makes coming home that bit more stressful.'ADNFCR-408-ID-801618292-ADNFCR
