Half of parents despair over the amount of time their children spend on social media during family holidays, a study has found.

This is perhaps unsurprising given that the average teen spends two hours a day checking their smartphone for the latest updates, with a third of parents reporting that their children are more concerned about keeping in touch with mates back home than enjoying some quality family time.

'Parents have a hard job at keeping children entertained on holiday, especially if your children are different ages and interested in different things,' commented a spokesperson for Atlantis, The Palm Hotel & Resort in Dubai, which conducted the poll.

'It's important to choose a location that suits everyone, whether they are toddlers, teenagers or middle-aged.'

The study found that a day out at a waterpark is the best way to get teenagers to put down their gadgets. ADNFCR-408-ID-801621320-ADNFCR
