Thailand is the most popular country for young Brits embarking on a year out after leaving school, new research shows.

According to new research from ABTA – The Travel Association, the Southeast Asian country leads the way, followed by Australia, USA, South Africa and Peru.

Asia dominates the list, with Vietnam and India coming sixth and eighth respectively, while Brazil is in seventh, New Zealand in ninth and Fiji rounds out the list in tenth.

With hundreds of thousands of teenagers having just received their A-Level results, many will now be looking to travel for a year before pursuing a university degree.

ABTA recommended that anyone doing so choose a reputable gap year travel company and check with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the various dos and don'ts, as well as a list of "no go" areas for any countries they may be visiting.

Victoria Bacon, head of communications at ABTA, said: "There is now an incredible choice of activities and destinations to support young travellers in developing and learning new skills. It's very important that if you’re planning a gap year, you research your options thoroughly." ADNFCR-408-ID-801625724-ADNFCR
