France is the world's most popular ski holiday destination, according to new figures.

Domaines Skiables de France (DSF) says that 57.9m 'skier days' were registered in the country last year, up 4.9%, The Local reports.

This put it ahead of long-time number one, the USA, which registered 59.6m in the 2012/2013 season. It first lost the lead the previous season. Third place was taken by Austria, where 54.2m skier days were enjoyed.

'The main reason is the price of the ski passes in France, which remain the cheapest in the world in relation to the size of the resorts,' Laurent Reynaud from DSF told the news provider.

However, a row over hosting by British guides in French resorts could see it lose out to rival destinations this time around. In February, the French authorities ruled that ski hosting is illegal, forcing unqualified guides off the slopes.ADNFCR-408-ID-801640825-ADNFCR
