Despite the wealth of destinations on offer around the world, perennial favourites have topped the list of places to take a gap year.

Heading up the top five compiled by ABTA - The Travel Association is Thailand, which remains popular with backpackers thanks to its cheap accommodation, beautiful beaches and lively resorts.

In second on the Gap Year Trends chart is Australia, where each year thousands of Brits take the wonderful route from Sydney in the south up the spectacular east coast to Cairns in the north.

The USA is the third most popular location and boasts sensational cities, awe-inspiring national parks and limitless activities. According to ABTA, it is the third most popular holiday destination among all Brits, with 1.8m visitors a year.

An incredible wildlife offering helps South Africa into fourth place, while the rugged Andes mountain range is the big draw for visitors to Peru in South America. ADNFCR-408-ID-801654182-ADNFCR
