Riga can expect an influx of visitors after it was named Europe's prettiest city by readers of USA Today and 10Best.

The Latvian capital, which is the 2014 European Capital of Culture, was praised for its 'pulsating big city vibe' and its collection of Art Nouveau buildings, which is Europe's largest.

Second behind 'the Gem of the Baltics' was Bergen in Norway, which is famous for its brightly coloured timber buildings and its proximity to some world-class ski areas.

Another winter resort, Innsbruck in Austria, placed third, ahead of the coastal city of Dubrovnik in Croatia and the historic town of Chester in England.

The Czech capital, Prague, was sixth; Budapest in Hungary was seventh; Santorini in Greece, with its iconic whitewashed, blue-domed houses, was eighth; Venice in Italy came ninth; and ancient Bruges in Belgium rounded out the top ten prettiest European cities.

'It became apparent early on that a trip to Europe makes a very lasting and positive impression upon a traveller,' commented 10Best.

'Therefore we'd like to suggest this list of winners be used as a bucket list for future travel.'ADNFCR-408-ID-801664990-ADNFCR
